Average salary in Tasmania

Tasmania’s state average is a broad benchmark. Paid weeks and the difference between Hobart and the rest of the state help explain an actual offer.

The short answer

The latest ABS full-time adult ordinary earnings average for Tasmania is $1,846.30 a week in May 2026, about $96,008 a year when multiplied by 52. This is before tax and excludes employer super and overtime.

Tasmania has the lowest mean in this table

Tasmania has the lowest state or territory full-time adult ordinary earnings mean in May 2026. It is $237.40 a week below the matching Australian average, about 11.4%. This describes one employee earnings measure at one time, rather than every Tasmanian occupation or household.

The annual equivalent is about $96,008. It is simply the weekly mean multiplied by 52. It excludes overtime and irregular annual bonuses, so it should not be read as a measured annual total for employees who receive those payments.

AreaWeeklyAnnual equivalent
Tasmania$1,846.30$96,008
Australia$2,083.70$108,352

The mean covers full-time adult employee jobs. It is before tax and excludes employer super, overtime and salary sacrifice. It is not the personal income of all residents. Annual equivalents are conversions rather than measured annual salaries.

Hobart is not the same as the whole state

In the August 2025 household survey, the main-job median was $1,400 a week in Greater Hobart and about $1,223 in the rest of Tasmania. The statewide median was $1,300. These figures include part-time employees and describe earnings in their main job.

The rest-of-state category combines different local markets. It does not give a separate salary for Launceston, Devonport or another town. Use comparable roles in the location you are considering, then check hours and the type of employment. A full-time state mean is especially easy to misread when the offer is for fewer hours.

These medians come from a different survey, period and employee population from the May 2026 means. Their difference is not a measured mean-to-median gap for one population.

Check how many weeks are actually paid

A weekly or hourly offer needs a realistic paid-year assumption. As an arithmetic example, $1,200 a week for 52 paid weeks is $62,400 before tax. At 48 paid weeks it is $57,600. Those are different annual incomes even though the advertised weekly rate is the same.

Paid annual leave belongs in the paid year. Do not reduce paid weeks merely because you spend some weeks away from the workplace. For a casual or seasonal arrangement, check the weeks and hours you reasonably expect to be paid, rather than using 52 automatically or assuming the same weekly roster continues all year.

Build the comparison from reliable cash

Use expected annual cash pay excluding employer super in the calculator. Put overtime or a bonus into a separate case when it is uncertain. Include HELP debt and the relevant hospital-cover setting, then convert the result to the period you use for bills.

For two Tasmanian offers, compare paid weeks, ordinary hours, leave arrangements and actual work costs. A higher hourly rate may buy fewer paid hours or provide a different leave arrangement. The statewide average cannot settle that comparison, but it can help you ask why the two offers are structured differently.

Common questions

Is $96,008 the average annual income of a Tasmanian resident?

No. It is the annual equivalent of a May 2026 weekly mean for full-time adult employee jobs. It excludes several pay components and is not a resident personal-income measure.

Should paid leave reduce the weeks I enter?

No, if it is paid. Reduce paid weeks for time that is genuinely unpaid. Working weeks used for commuting and actual work time are a separate figure.
